The new privacy policy of Google - Advantages and Disadvantages

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Google has been the ultimate leader in search engines for many years. Even when the Yahoo profits had steeply declined, Google maintained a stable market position. Much of their success had to do with the Ad words advertisers Google had. In return Google protected the advertisers agianst any eventualities. They banned adsense publishers for invalid clicks and banned them for life. They used targeted ads for Gmail accounts increasing the profitability of advertisers.

They acquired the android mobiles and made Google mandatory in them. In fact Google became the other word of Internet in the world. But one area where Google felt deserted was in the case of Google+ when compared to the Facebook. Even though Google tried their level best to promote it, Facebook and twitter still were unbeatable. It was then the Google came up with the idea of “Search Plus Your World”. With this new feature Google introduced the Google + results into the search engine results ahead of other websites. This move marked furious criticisms all over the world, but Google held on to its decisions.
And further Google introduced the new privacy policy.

With the new privacy policy of Google, all the Google accounts of one user will be integrated. That means that your Gmail account would be integrated with your Google + and Youtube accounts. So what hapens is information acquired by Google in one account can be used by Google to attain profit in another area. For example suppose you searched for Nokia lumia 900 videos in Youtube. Now Google knows that you are intersted in Nokia lumia 900; so Google will start to display ads about Nokia lumia 900 in Gmail and other Google sites. Hence there is greater chance for the readers to be interested in the ads.
Google makes this system a compulsory one from 1 March 2012. From this date every Google system will be integrated and will be viewed by Google as one single system. There is no way you can opt out of this regulation. You will have to delete your account.

Advantages for you
As per the claims of Google, the search engine results would get better. They say that whenever you type Apple in Google home page, with this new system Google will be able to understand whether you meant apple for eating or apple for gadgets.
Another advantage is that you will have an all in one network in your hands. You need not log in separately to every Google network.

Disadvantages for you
Many Privacy groups have condemned this collection of information by Google as a security hazard. The question they ask is what happens when this information gets into the hands of a third party? Also such a database of information will be on the minds of various Government agencies as the perfect platform for their various operations.
But Google repeatedly claims that the information collected will not be shared with any other third party.
In fact there is not much option for you. If ever you want to use Google, you will have to accept this new privacy policy of Google. Considering the advantages of browsing with Google, it would be a foolish approach to delete your Google account.
But you need to decide if you want to lead a safe and peaceful life or lead a successful and risky life?
Google has opened their new privacy policy for discussions.

Posted On // Leave a Comment
We all know Gmail is one of the most famous email based service in the world. It is one of the simple and easy way to use and which has most powerful features within and also under the hood it has more features where you can enable more advanced functionality which we call it as "Labs".

Actually what is meant by Gmail Labs:
Gmail itself says that:

Gmail Labs allows you to try out experimental new features in Gmail. If you're going to brave the Labs world, it's important to keep the following things in mind about these features:

  • They may break at any time.
  • Similarly, they may disappear temporarily or permanently.
  • They may work so well that they graduate and become regular features.
So,Try at your own risk of course none of these features will not harm you in any kind or gobble your email but they are just not polished at Google would want them to be.

To enable the Labs in your Gmail,Just login to your Gmail account and click on the settings link and then select the Labs tab.Now select Add-ons you like from the list by 'Enable/Disable' radio button and save the changes you done by clicking the Save Changes button

I found Some of these Add-on Features to have a worth useful...check out right now:

Inbox Preview :

This Add-on shows you the latest mails you had in your inbox as a preview before you enter into inbox. It will be very important if your waiting for any important mail.Well if it loads slow for slow connections,I prefer you to use Basic Html.

Mouse Gestures :

These Add-on helps to surf Next or Previous mails by holding right-click and move your mouse Left or Right to go for a previous or next messages. And if you move up you will be back into inbox. These is one of the best alternate way of browsing your mails,Of course you require a little practice.

Undo Send :

These is the one of the Best Add-on because we can Undo the mail we sent.It is a most helpful Add-on for many of them since all of us make a minor mistakes while we send mails to others. It adds a Undo option feature to allow the mail revert which we sent.Of course i think these feature will be available for 5-10 Seconds after you sent the mail. But these Add-on is worth for most of them and also useful.

Custom Keyboard Shortcuts :

It lets you add custom keyboard shortcuts you define and it also add a new settings tab to re-define keys.

Inserting Images :

Allows you to add Images into your mail(message body). You can upload the images and insert from your computer or you can also insert by image Url

Gmail Gets New Contact Manager and New Look

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Gmail has finally got a new contact manager, which is 100 times better than the earlier one. The new contact manager is fast and easier to use, and is definitely a welcome change to one of the best email services available online today.

I have been a Gmail user for a while now and to be frank, managing contacts was definitely a pain. The older contacts interface was mediocre at its best when compared to how powerful Gmail in itself was. However, that is now a thing of the past as Google is rolling out a new contact manager for all Gmail users starting today.

The new contacts manager has a more prominent link as seen in the first screenshot above and will also work pretty much like Gmail works, fast. The new contacts manager now supports Keyboard shortcuts, sorting by name, custom labels for contact fields, ability to undo changes you made and automatic saving just like Gmail compose among other things.
In addition to the contact manager changes, Gmail also sports links to Mail, Contacts and Tasks in the top left and displays a Compose mail button instead of a text. There is also some screen estate recovery thanks to the reduction in the header area. However, Google has also made it a bit painful to select messages by removing the links and putting it into a dropdown.
Overall these changes are pretty good and make Gmail the best free email service out there. The new changes to the Gmail contact manager and overall email layout will be rolled out to all users in a phased manner.

YouTube Mobile Gets a Kick Start

Posted On // Leave a Comment

It’s well known that the mobile internet is huge and growing fast; what’s surprising is exactly how fast. According to a recent report, within 5 years more users will connect to the internet via mobile devices than desktop PCs. YouTube consumption on mobile devices has also grown considerably -- playbacks were up 160% in 2009 over the previous year. And we’re excited to announce that YouTube Mobile now receives more than 100 million video playbacks a day. This is roughly the number of daily playbacks that YouTube.com was streaming when we joined forces with Google in 2006.

We launched YouTube on mobile devices in 2007 with about 1,000 videos available on the mobile site (m.youtube.com). While this suddenly opened up the possibility to access videos on the go, our site, mobile browsers and the hardware had limitations that prevented the mobile experience from keeping up with YouTube on the desktop. Today, more than ever, we know that you want to be able to find and access your favorite videos wherever you are. That’s why we’ve been working hard to roll out an updated version of the mobile site.

Here's what's new about the new mobile site:
  • It's really fast.
  • The new user interface incorporates larger, more touch friendly elements, making it easier to access videos on the go.
  • It incorporates the features and functionality you’ve come to expect from the .com site, like search query suggestions, the options to create playlists, the ability to designate “favorite,” “like,” or “unlike” videos directly from your device.
  • As we make improvements to Youtube.com, you’ll see them quickly follow on our mobile site, unlike native apps which are not updated as frequently.
As the world continues to go mobile, we think this is a great improvement for users who want a more consistent YouTube across many devices, no matter where they are. We're launching in English only today, but will be rolling it out in other languages in the coming months. You can access the latest YouTube mobile site from your iPhone or Android browser. To learn more, visitm.youtube.com to check out the latest improvements and take a minute to watch this demo video:

Google Intros Refreshed Email App For iPad

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Google has rolled out a new version of its browser-based Gmail product for the Apple iPad.

One of the best applications available for the Apple iPad isn't made by Apple. It's made by Google. I'm talking about the version of Gmail that Google has cooked up for the iPad's Safari browser. It has lots of baked in HTML5 goodness, and is nearly as powerful as the full Web version of the application. Today it got a little bit better.
This isn't the huge leap forward, but the Safari version of Gmail now has an improved email composition screen. Before today, the email composition screen was split between the inbox and compose view. (See the difference here.) It worked, but it was a little bit cramped. Now, a new window appears letting users compose emails in a much bigger screen with more text visible.
Google also says it made some minor bug fixes, including a truly annoying bug that prevented scrolling up and down in longer email messages. They now scroll up and down without a hiccup. Google says the changes are only available for the English version of Gmail in Safari.
These are nice and appreciated changes, but I am waiting for Google to pay attention to the mobile version of Google Docs. Google Docs users are still unable to edit Google Docs from the browser of the iPad. Where's the HTML5 love for Google Docs? This is a serious drawback and one I am hoping Google is able/willing to correct in the short term.
Come to think of it, Google Calendar could use a little help, too. It wants to default to the mobile version when used on the iPad. The mobile version works, but isn't as full-featured as the normal desktop version. The desktop version has obviously not been optimized for touch, and can be flighty. These are three services (Gmail, Calendar, Docs) that Google pitches to the enterprise, so I am little surprised that Google hasn't ramped up efforts to improve them sooner.

How about it, Google?

Connecticut AG Investigating Google WiFi Incident

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said on Monday that his office will helm an investigation into the unauthorized collection of wireless network traffic by Google's Street View cars on behalf of an undisclosed number of states.
"My office will lead a multistate investigation -- expected to involve a significant number of states -- into Google's deeply disturbing invasion of personal privacy," Blumenthal said in a statement. "Street View cannot mean Complete View -- invading home and business computer networks and vacuuming up personal information and communications."
Over 30 states participated in a conference call about the status of Connecticut's investigation, but it's not immediately clear how many of those will participate in Blumenthal's inquiry.
Last month, Google revealed that it had inadvertently included experimental code that gathered unprotected WiFi network traffic in the software it used to capture images for its Street View service. The disclosure, which Google executives have apologized for and acknowledged as a screw-up, has prompted multiple lawsuits and Congressional scrutiny in the U.S. and widespread indignation in Europe.
Google has gathered Street View images in over 30 countries. Some countries have asked Google to delete the WiFi data it gathered while taking pictures; other countries have asked Google to retain the WiFi data to facilitate investigations.
Acknowledging its error, Google nonetheless maintains that it broke no U.S. laws. "It was a mistake for us to include code in our software that collected payload data, but we believe we didn't break any U.S. laws," said a company spokesperson in an e-mailed statement. "We’re working with the relevant authorities to answer their questions and concerns."
The statement by Blumenthal appears to anticipate the possibility that Google may not have violated any laws. "Our investigation will consider whether laws may have been broken and whether changes to state and federal statutes may be necessary," he said.
Last week, the French National Commission on Computing and Liberty (CNIL) released the findings of its Google Street View investigation in France. The group found that Google had captured e-mail account passwords as it grabbed data from unprotected WiFi networks.
Google-translated version of CNIL's statement about its finding claims that Google "posted excerpts of content of electronic messages," but a Google spokesperson said this appears to be a bad translation because Google has not posted any captured e-mail content.
